How it's Made
Although each piece is different, the basic steps remain the same for most items. All stages are carried out by hand, with care.
- The first stage is preparing the clay, this is done by wedging the clay to remove any air bubbles and give a nice consistent clay ball. It looks similar to the process of kneading dough.
- Next, the clay is thrown on the wheel. The clay is centered and shaped on the wheel using many different techniques that stretch and pull the clay into shape.
- The piece is then 'Wired' off the wheel and set aside to dry. This simple process can be tricky without mishaping the form.
- Once dry enough the clay is turned upside down and recentered on the wheel. It is 'turned,' a process that envolves carving away the excess clay from the bottom of the pot and creating a nice footring for the piece to sit on.
- Before the piece fully dries any final touches are added. Things like adding handles, carving, altering the shape and finally, stamping in my makers mark.
- When fully dry the piece is placed in the kiln and Bisque fired to just over 1000°C. 2 days later the piece is cool enough to remove.
- Once bisque fired the Piece is Glazed by dipping, pouring and brushing to acheive the desired result.
- The Piece is then Fired a Second time to a final temperature of 1220°C and 2 days later the completed Piece is unloaded from the kiln.
